Million Chicken, Epping

This is Million Chicken, a Korean charcoal-chicken venue focused on smoked and grilled chicken.

The menu centres on charcoal-grilled chicken in several flavours, with tteokbokki, fried chicken and Korean street-food sides providing variation.

Set 3 Classic & Smoked Chicken Set ($55.00) — smoky charcoal-grilled chicken with classic sweet and spicy tteokbokki

There was some uncertainty over the final dish, as the original order was initially brought out incorrectly as the Crispy Original Roasted Chicken (see below). It was returned to the kitchen and came back on the same plate, still carrying the grease and mess from the first dish, this time covered in teriyaki sauce and accompanied by a hurried apology.

The final chicken comprised eight pieces of chicken thigh fillet. There was a noticeable charred flavour across some of the surface, although it was not substantially different from what could be achieved by well-searing chicken thigh in a pan. The teriyaki sauce dominated the flavour, while the chicken itself remained juicy. The accompanying pickles provided useful freshness and crunch against the heavier sauce, while the cabbage salad contained slivers of raw onion that were unpleasantly sharp.

The tteokbokki was a small portion served in a pasta bowl, which made it appear more substantial. The rice cakes were tender, with only a few thin slices of fish cake and a single green leaf for colour. Its sauce had a pleasant balance of sweetness and spicy heat, but the gochugaru contributed a significant gritty texture that detracted from the dish.

Overall, the food was acceptable but unremarkable, while the handling of the incorrect order and its subsequent presentation significantly affected the experience. There was little here that warranted a return visit.

Million Chicken is located at Unit 2a/74 Rawson St, Epping NSW 2121.
