Calbee Jagabee Kishu Ripe Ume

This is the Calbee Jagabee Kishu Ripe Ume, made with ume flesh powder containing 100% Kishu-grown ume.

Each box contained five individual bags featuring four distinct package designs.

The fries measured approximately 0.8 × 0.8 cm in cross-section and ranged from 2 to 8 cm in length. They were pale yellow, dusted with fine salt and a red-pink ume powder, and carried a familiar fried potato aroma without any strong ume presence.

On tasting, the surface delivered an immediate tang from the ume powder, leading into a crisp crunch that revealed the potato’s full-bodied savouriness. The depth of the fried potato flavour was pronounced, with the ume powder returning toward the finish to impart a clean, tart fruitiness. The salt served to centre the potato as the primary flavour, while the ume contributed a gentle sharpness and fresh brightness that differentiated it from Western salt-and-vinegar seasonings.

Overall, a well-balanced and distinctive variation on the classic Jagabee fry, highlighting the interplay between savoury richness and refined tartness.

This Calbee Jagabee Kishu Ripe Ume contained 75 g (15 g x 5 bags). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
