Rumour has it that Dragon Espresso in Chinatown is home to one of Sydney’s best Hong Kong milk teas, so of course, I went to find out for myself.
This is the Dragon Espresso Iced Milk Tea Hong Kong Style ($7.00, fixed sweetness, fixed ice).
The tea was an opaque tan colour with a rich black tea aroma. Consumed chilled, richly aromatic and malty notes of black tea came through from the head of each sip and persisted to a bold finish with a balanced sweetness and mild astringency. The mouthfeel was smooth and silky, coating the mouth with every velvety sip and without a puckering astringency lingering in the finish. Overall, this milk tea lived up to its reputation and was a far cry from the watery Taiwanese milk teas available from many bubble tea shops. That said, the intensity of its flavour was directly related to the caffeine content and one drink felt similar to a double espresso shot.
