With the post office moved to the other side of Eastwood Station, the huge space was taken up partly by Harvest Foodie, a shop that is part shop front and part dining in for Chinese dim sum dishes served at yum cha as well as street vendors. We had limited interest in most of their offerings but since Hey Sweetie Bakery closed down in Parramatta, I’ve been keen to find a similar substitute for their wife cake that was easily the best in all of Sydney.
The wife cakes were 4 for $12.00, each an ovular shape around 8 x 6 x 1.5 cm in size with a golden brown top and covered in sesame seeds.
Biting through, the pastry was flaky with a thin crust atop — sure signs of pork lard shortening and an egg wash being used — but the filling was not similarly on point. The filling was smooth and sweet with a gentle bounce from the glutinous flour and almond paste but lacked candied wintermelon bits or sesame seeds that give it that moreish flavour and texture. This left an overall flavour of good pastry with a rather sweet and slightly chewy interior that was mild enough to be enjoyable but lacking in the flavours and textures that we were after.
