Under the guidance of Andrew Ray, a former general manager at David Thompson’s Long Chim, the menu at Roti Rebel by Kafe Kooks pays homage to this delightful carbohydrate. Notably, ‘Kafe’ translates to ‘coffee’ in Indonesian, while ‘Kooks’ offers a nod to David Bowie’s 1971 song—an homage that Ray, himself a fan, proudly embraces.

The Malaysian-style roti boasted a crispy exterior, distinguishing it from the softer variants commonly found in establishments like Mamak or Papparich. Meanwhile, its interior maintained a delicate, buttery, and non-greasy consistency that struck a harmonious balance. The accompanying butter chicken curry displayed well-crafted spicing and a fragrant quality, diverging from excessive sweetness—a divergence that artfully complemented the subtle sweetness of the roti, the latter’s dough having been enriched with condensed milk. The portion of chicken was substantial, contributing to a thoroughly satisfying meal, with the roti adeptly fulfilling its role in sopping up the delectable sauce.
Beyond the food, the ambience was comfortable, accompanied by notably amiable and approachable service.
