This is the Ommi’s Lava Mooncake Kuki Black Sesame.
It featured a black sesame-flavoured crust and green bean paste with a molten black sesame centre, all made using Kuki-branded black sesame paste. Traditional in its circular form, it measured approximately 5 cm in diameter and 2 cm in height. The exterior presented a pitch-black hue and released a mellow nutty aroma upon opening.
On tasting, the surface yielded a light crispness before giving way to the dense bean paste and molten centre. Despite its striking appearance, the black sesame flavour began rather subdued, suggesting that charcoal powder might have been used to deepen the colour despite its omission from the ingredients list. The bean paste contributed a gentle nuttiness that was not distinctly black sesame, while the molten centre provided the richest and most aromatic aspect of the experience.
Overall, following the impeccable Oolong Tea with Osmanthus version, this mooncake was enjoyable yet would have benefited from a more robust and aromatic black sesame profile.
