Senjaku Naoshichi Gumi

This is the Senjaku Naoshichi Gumi, a gummy featuring whole naoshichi sourced from Kōchi Prefecture. Naoshichi is a traditional Japanese citrus closely related to sudachi and forms part of a broader naoshichi product range produced by the company.

The gummy presented as a disc moulded to resemble a citrus slice, complete with segmented detailing. Each piece measured approximately 2 cm in diameter and 0.5 cm in thickness, with an opaque yellow appearance and smooth surface. The aroma opened with a sweet, fragrant citrus profile characterised by floral notes and a gentle freshness.

Initial contact delivered immediate softness, with the teeth sinking readily into the upper portion of the gummy before encountering greater resistance in the lower layer. This secondary layer provided a firmer, bouncy elasticity that contrasted effectively with the softer jelly-like top. The naoshichi flavour was immediately recognisable, with the upper jelly component emphasising sweet floral citrus notes and a melt-in-the-mouth quality.

Through the mid-palate, the firmer gummy base introduced increasing acidity and juiciness, adding depth and complexity to the flavour progression while extending the chewing experience. The transition from sweet floral citrus to brighter, more acidic notes was gradual and well integrated. After several pieces, a mild numbing sensation developed on the tongue, suggestive of the presence of citrus oils. These oils became more apparent during the latter stages of the chew, contributing a subtle aromatic sharpness that enhanced the authenticity of the citrus profile.

Towards the finish, the sweetness and acidity slowly receded while the aromatic citrus oils lingered on the palate. The floral character remained evident even after the gummy had been consumed, producing a clean and persistent aftertaste that reinforced the fruit’s distinctive identity.

Overall, a layered citrus gummy with a sweet floral-to-bright acidic flavour progression and a dual-texture structure that transitions from soft jelly to elastic chew, resulting in a nuanced and highly expressive citrus confection.

This Senjaku Naoshichi Gumi contained 40 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2026.
