Kikkoman Soy Milk Craft Soy Latte Bitter

This is the Kikkoman Soy Milk Craft Soy Latte Bitter. It uses 100% Arabica beans, with 76% of the coffee derived from beans grown in Colombia and Guatemala and extracted using a cloth filter. The beverage contains 4% soy bean solids and brown sugar (3.9% carbohydrates). It presented with an opaque medium tan hue and a pronounced roasted coffee aroma.

Consumed chilled, the opening impression was a mellow bitterness that quickly built into a firm roasted coffee presence. Mid-sip, the soy milk became more evident, lending a soft creaminess from the 4% soy bean solids while remaining secondary to the coffee. Towards the finish, the bitterness returned more prominently, accompanied by a moderate lingering astringency. Despite the inclusion of brown sugar, the sweetness was extremely restrained and barely perceptible, leaving the drink to read largely as unsweetened. Compared with the Creamy version in the same range, the inclusion of coffee extract here appeared to drive the stronger roast character and the more pronounced bitterness.

Overall, this was a coffee-forward soy latte with restrained sweetness, clear roasted character and a slightly astringent finish.
