Koikeya Strong Abare Nori Wasabi

This is the Koikeya Strong Abare Nori Wasabi, a crinkle-cut potato chip positioned with a deliberately aggressive flavour profile. It incorporated Azumino-grown wasabi and is marketed as carrying approximately three times the usual seasoning load.

The chips varied between 6–8 cm in diameter, with a pronounced crinkle structure, a pale yellow base, and dense flecking of green seasoning granules around 1 mm in size. The aroma opened immediately on contact with a sharp wasabi lift layered over a marine, roasted seaweed savouriness.

Initial contact delivered a restrained sweetness from the wasabi, which shifted rapidly into a direct, pungent heat as the chip fractured under a firm, sustained crunch. That texture carried through cleanly to the finish without collapse or staling. Mid-palate development introduced a mild soy-derived salinity that briefly grounded the profile, allowing a secondary potato note to surface as a soft, rounded warmth beneath the heat.

The crinkle structure played a defining role, trapping seasoning within the ridges and intensifying distribution across the mid-palate. As a result, the wasabi character frequently overrode the expected nori presence, reducing it to a background umami tone rather than a dominant seaweed note. Select chips escalated into a sinus-clearing intensity towards the finish, while others resolved more gently, depending on seasoning concentration across the surface. Oiliness was minimal, and residue remained controlled despite the heavy coating.

Overall, a crinkle-cut potato chip with a progressive heat-led flavour arc and structurally amplified seasoning retention, resulting in a highly assertive, wasabi-forward eating experience best suited to heat-preferred palates.
