This is the Morinaga Chestnut Azuki Monaka, made with Hokkaidō-grown azuki.

Each piece combined red bean paste with small chestnut pieces and a layer of vanilla ice cream, all enclosed within wafer shells. It measured roughly 15 × 6 × 2.5 cm.

On tasting, the wafer edges had softened and taken on a soggy texture, though the central sections retained a slightly chewy crispness that contributed a gentle rice note. The vanilla ice cream was light and airy, functioning largely as a cooling backdrop. This allowed the azuki and chestnut paste to take prominence, offering a well-balanced sweetness with the chestnut adding earthier depth and subtle textural variation. The contrast between the soft ice cream, the red bean paste, and the remaining crispness of the wafer made the overall profile engaging despite the uneven texture at the edges.
Overall, satisfying, though the softened wafer edges detracted slightly from the experience.
This Morinaga Chestnut Azuki Monaka contained 120 mL. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2025.
