This is the Okinaya Tawawa, a Japanese-style apple pastry made with Aomori-grown red apples soaked in glacé liquor and sandwiched between buttery, homemade pie crust. It was notably presented to the Crown Prince at the 21st National Tree-Planting Festival in Hiranai Town, Aomori City, in 1997.

The apple pie measured approximately 5 cm x 4 cm x 1 cm, with the two layers of pastry and the apple layer each occupying roughly one-third of the height. It had a rich aroma of fermented butter. The pie crust offered a rich, buttery flavour with a balance of flakiness, light crunch, and tenderness. However, the apple layer was understated, contributing only a mild fruity sweetness without pronounced apple flavour, whether sweet or tart.
Overall, the flavour was dominated by the richness of the pie crust, overshadowing the apple filling. The result was akin to a luxurious butter pastry with a hint of sweetness in between, rather than an apple pie.
This Okinaya Tawawa contained one serving. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Aomori, Japan in 2024.
