Mousse Pocky has an incredibly luxurious mouthfeel, surpassed only by what I imagine Baton d’or, the premium version of Pocky, tastes like. It’ll be a while until I’ll know for sure though, as Baton d’or is available only in stores sparsely dotted around Japan and there was a 2 hour queue when D and I stumbled upon one in 2015.

Mango Mousse has a pale yellow mango fudge that, like the matcha version, is almost twice as thick as standard Pocky coating. It’s the secret behind the luxurious mouthfeel in the Mousse Pocky series.

The pleasant smell of mango escapes as you open the packaging. It’s fleeting, though, and that’s reflected in the strength of the mango flavour. While it captured the flavour of fresh mangoes, much like the matcha version, the flavour was barely there and comes only as a hint as the fudge melts in your mouth. I’m not bad when it comes to picking up subtle flavours, but a product that’s claiming to be a particular flavour should be boldly flavoured without fear of offending people’s taste buds! Otherwise, you end up with something like a biscuit stick covered in nondescript sweet fudge. That said, the biscuits have the same crunch you expect from Pocky produced in Japan and there’s still the satisfaction of sinking your teeth sink into the fudge.
