This is the Nippon Yell Dried Fruit Nagano Fuji Apple, featuring bite-sized dried and candied pieces of Fuji apple from Nagano Prefecture. Fuji apples, a cross between the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Janet varieties, were named after the town of Fujisaki in Aomori Prefecture, where they were developed.

Each piece had a golden-yellow hue and a sweet apple aroma. The pieces varied in size, averaging about 2 cm at their widest. The exterior was dry and firm but yielded easily, offering a soft bite. The initial sweetness from the candied surface gave way to a boldly sweet apple flavour, though it lacked the more nuanced qualities found in other varieties. It didn’t develop the honey-like depth of the Esashi (Sun Fuji) or the fresh acidity of the Ōrin. Unlike the textured pieces of Esashi, which rehydrated to release a rich, juicy apple flavour, the Fuji pieces softened to a purée-like consistency, even more so than the Ōrin.

While enjoyable, much like the fresh fruit itself, other varieties offer more complexity and texture.
