Claypot Kitchen, Macquarie Park

Claypot Kitchen specialises in Hong Kong-style claypot rice, hand-pulled rice noodle rolls, and double-boiled stewed soups, prepared with fresh ingredients and attention to traditional methods.

The menu focuses on comforting classics, with each claypot made to order and finished with a splash of sweet soy sauce to bring the elements together.

Sausage & Black Bean Pork Ribs Claypot Rice ($18.80)

A well-balanced dish where the sweet soy, even used generously, remained measured and never overly salty. The pork ribs were savoury and umami-rich, complemented by the sweetness and firmness of the lap cheong sausage. The rice was cooked to an ideal consistency—distinct grains, neither wet nor dry, and held its structure against the sauce. The inclusion of baby spinach was incongruous, where a more traditional leafy green such as choy sum or gāi lǎn would have been expected.

Sausage, Mushroom & Chicken Claypot Rice ($18.80)

The mushrooms were plump and succulent, with the chicken similarly tender, though lacking the firmer bite and richer flavour offered by the pork ribs in the previous dish. As before, the rice was evenly cooked and well-textured. The baby spinach again felt out of place, detracting slightly from the otherwise traditional flavour profile.

The standout feature across both dishes was the bottom layer of rice, which achieved a notable crispness—comparable to Japanese okoge. Among Sydney’s claypot offerings, this was the most texturally satisfying to date. A return visit to dine in rather than takeaway would likely enhance this element further, served directly from the claypot at the table.
