Zi Hai Guo Claypot Rice Cantonese Style Sausage

This is the Zi Hai Guo Claypot Rice Cantonese Style Sausage, a self-heating meal kit designed to replicate the flavour of traditional claypot rice. This variety featured Cantonese-style lap cheong and corn.

Each unit came with a plastic outer bowl, plastic lid, and an inner aluminium tray. Inside were individually sealed packs of dehydrated rice, filtered water, wet toppings (in this case, sliced lap cheong and corn kernels), a sachet of seasoning sauce, and the self-heating element.

Preparation involved assembling all contents (excluding the seasoning sauce) into the aluminium bowl. The self-heating element was then placed into the base of the plastic bowl and activated by adding cold tap water. Once the aluminium tray was placed above the heating element and sealed with the lid, steam began venting within a few minutes. After approximately 15 minutes, the lid was removed and the seasoning sauce stirred through before serving.

On tasting, the rice was evenly cooked, with clearly defined grains that were neither overly soft nor dry. While it lacked the crispy bottom typical of traditional claypots cooked over direct heat, the texture remained satisfying. The lap cheong was notably authentic—juicy rather than dry—and imparted a savoury richness once combined with the sauce. The inclusion of corn was unexpected but effective, offering bursts of natural sweetness and freshness that paired well with the dish.

Overall, the result was surprisingly flavourful and texturally balanced, delivering a credible claypot experience for a fraction of the price and effort. At $6.00 per bowl, this would be worth repurchasing for a convenient, well-seasoned meal with a cohesive blend of rice, protein, and vegetable.
