Marunaga Aisu Manjū Yame Matcha

This is the Marunaga Aisu Manjū Yame Matcha. The ice cream featured a centre of tsubuan made from azuki beans grown in Hokkaidō and was surrounded by ice cream made from yame green tea from Fukuoka.

Each ice cream resembled a five-petal plum blossom, standing at approximately 5 cm tall and 5 cm in diameter. The top two-thirds featured an azuki bean center, encased in a 3 mm layer of matcha ice cream, which extended to the bottom third.

The ice cream was creamy with a rich matcha flavour, mellow bitterness, and restrained sweetness. This contrasted with the earthy, bright sweetness of the chunky azuki. While the visual ratio of azuki to ice cream might have appeared disproportionate, the elements were finely balanced in terms of texture and sweetness, resulting in an overall impression of a subtly luxurious ice cream that skillfully highlighted two quintessential Japanese flavours.

This Marunaga Aisu Manjū Yame Matcha contained 425 mL (85 mL x 5 pieces). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2023.
