This is the Morozoff Galette au Beurre Galette Classique. ‘Galette au Beurre’ translates to ‘baked butter’ in French, and true to its name, the (Japanese) brand specializes in baked confectionery crafted with fermented butter from Izny, France. The Galette Classique box features two of the most popular flavors in their lineup.

Galette Bretonne. This featured a sable cookie made with fermented butter and mineral-rich salt.

The cookie measured approximately 4 cm in diameter and 1 cm in height, presenting a golden brown crust and a golden yellow center, resembling the appearance of a tart.

The thickness of this sable resulted in a crisp, coarse crumb texture, allowing the fermented butter to impart its profound buttery essence throughout the palate. Its fragrant flavour was enhanced with a touch of salt, contributing depth to its rich savoury quality. This cookie leaned predominantly towards a savoury profile, with only a subtle hint of sweetness, possibly from the egg glaze on top. The rich butter aroma and taste were fresh and well-balanced, avoiding overwhelming notes, unlike the case with the Pretz Cultured Butter.

Galette Nantaise. This featured cookie made with fermented butter and ground almonds.

The cookie was about 5 cm in diameter and 0.3 cm in height, with a golden brown top.

Unlike the preceding savoury cookie, this one was sweet, featuring a fine crumb texture. The ground almonds imparted a subtle nuttiness, complemented by a hint of vanilla and enriched by the decadence of fermented butter. With a milder flavor profile compared to the previous cookie, it offered an easily enjoyable treat.
In general, we found these butter cookies to be a step above the standard Danish cookies typically found in tins, which curiously are often manufactured in China.
This Morozoff Galette au Beurre Galette Classique contained 10 pieces. It was produced in Japan and received as a gift from acquaintances visiting Japan in 2023.
