KitKat comes in a dizzying array of flavours if this series of KitKat flavours here is any indication. Yet, while you can get some KitKat flavours that are limited to a specific region in Japan, you can also get flavours that are part of their ‘Special’ series, which are available only from their Kit Kat Chocolatory stores in Japan. There were three stores when I visited in 2014 and another two have opened up in 2015.

One of these flavours, which is still sold, is a Nestlé KitKat Special Strawberry Maple with strawberry and maple syrup flavoured cream sandwiched between wafers, then covered in strawberry and maple syrup flavoured white chocolate.

This KitKat tastes like a strawberry flavoured white chocolate sweetened with maple syrup and flecked with strawberry throughout (as opposed to strawberry infused maple syrup). It’s a distinct strawberry taste from the first bite that leaves you with the fragrant after taste of maple syrup. Unfortunately, the flecks of strawberry are for visuals only and don’t seem to anything to the flavour or texture. But that’s all right – it’s a very enjoyable KitKat. It’s very sweet, although not cloyingly so – sweetened with maple syrup, it takes on its clear flavour, which doesn’t linger much longer after eating it.
