This is the Casahana Elegance 2I Green Tea Apricot & German Black Forest Mooncakes

This tin contained two flavours – Green Tea Apricot (left) and German Black Forest (right).

The Green Tea Apricot mooncake featured a green tea crust encasing green tea-flavoured lotus paste, with an orange-flavoured mung bean centre and dried apricot.

The mooncake had a mild green tea flavour, with only a subtle grassy note in both the pastry and the lotus paste, though the sweet lotus flavour dominated. The texture was smooth and creamy, contrasting with the softer, fine-grained orange-flavoured mung bean centre, which had a bold orange juice flavour. The firmness and intense flavour of the dried apricot became dominant mid-bite. Overall, while there was an attempt to create taste and textural contrast, this mooncake was not particularly noteworthy. A stronger green tea presence would have better balanced the apricot.

The German Black Forest mooncake featured a chocolate crust encasing chocolate-flavoured lotus paste studded with chocolate chips and dried blackcurrants, with a red glacé cherry at the centre.

The mooncake had a rich chocolate flavour, enhanced by a hint of coffee, in the soft crumb baked crust as well as the lotus paste. The paste delivered a bold enough chocolate flavour that it masked most of the lotus flavour, giving it a thick and creamy quality accented by chocolate chips for texture and richer chocolate flavour, as well as tiny dried blackcurrants that offered a gentle fruity quality to reinforce the ‘cherry’ aspect, yet without dominating either in texture or flavour. The red glace cherry, which replaced the egg yolk moon in a traditional mooncake, was a considered touch, pretty with a bolder pop of sweet tartness.

Overall, the German Black Forest mooncake was the more successful of the two flavours in the tin. It was a well-executed chocolate-flavoured mooncake, with each element contributing distinct characteristics that enhanced the overall tasting experience.
