Walking through the new food court in Building 2 at UTS, I spotted this Apple Crumble Croissant ($5.00) and with my recent positive adventures at TiNi Artisan Bakehouse, I was curious to give this inspired flavour from a nondescript cafe a go.

The croissant is filled with an apple filling spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, and topped with an apple crumble crust. Warmed, the apple came through with a soft, stewed mouthfeel with a prominent cinnamon flavour that retains none of the acidity and bite of a good apple filling, while the croissant is dense and not flaky at all from being weighed down by the filling and the crust, which has a good crunch but adds only more sweetness to the already sweet croissant.
There’s probably a reason cafes inside universities remain lacklustre — as long as they sell passable food there’s enough foot traffic to ensure business. If I’m looking for quality baked goods, a bakery is where it’s at.
The Little Roaster is located at UTS Building 2, 15 Broadway, Ultimo NSW 2007.
