This is the UHA Mikakutō Gotōchi Premium Aomori Gumi Fragrant Ōrin, produced in collaboation with Hirosaki University in Aomori Prefecture and part of the ‘Gotouchi Premium’ series, which features the flavours of iconic fruits from different regions of Japan.

Aomori Prefecture is the largest apple producing area in Japan. This gummy uses fruit juice from Ōrin apples, which has the third highest production volume after Fuji and Tsugaru varieties. Ōrin (lit. king of apples) is a yellow-green variety with a light and crispy texture, a strong sweetness, and a mellow fragrance.

The gummy had a golden yellow hue, shaped like a waterdrop, measuring approximately 2.5 cm in length, 1.4 cm in width, and 1.2 cm in height, with a mellow sweet apple aroma.

Upon tasting, the gummy offered a very firm and elastic texture, equivalent to a 5 out of 5 on the Meiji scale of softness to hardness. The apple flavour emerged after the second or third chew, starting with a honey-like sweetness followed by a notable juicy acidity mid-bite, reminiscent of Yello apples available in Australia. The gummy’s firm, bouncy resistance prolonged the chew time, allowing us to fully appreciate its rich flavour. In the finish, the juiciness receded while the apple flavour remained, leaving a light and crisp aftertaste. The rich flavour and bouncy texture made these gummies worth repurchasing.
