Mermaid Cafe, Auckland

This is Mermaid Cafe, a cafe specialising in inari sushi with a wide variety of toppings, alongside sushi tacos and other contemporary Japanese-inspired offerings.

Inari Honey Teriyaki Wagyu ($3.80)

Initial contact delivered a sweet-savoury profile from the honey teriyaki wagyu, supported by the sweetness of caramelised onions. The seasoned beef integrated smoothly with the vinegared short-grain rice, creating an immediately cohesive flavour profile. Through the mid-palate, the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce and onions continued to develop, though the textural structure remained relatively uniform. The softness of the wagyu, rice and tofu skin closely mirrored one another, resulting in limited contrast between components. Osmanthus petals added visual appeal but contributed little to the flavour or texture of the dish. The finish resolved into lingering sweet-savoury notes and gentle acidity from the rice.

Inari Wasabi Whelk ($3.80)

Initial contact delivered the bounce and chew of the whelk alongside the aromatic sharpness of wasabi. The shellfish immediately established a more dynamic textural profile than the wagyu. Through the mid-palate, the whelk continued to provide resistance and chew, contrasting effectively with the softness of the vinegared short-grain rice. Crunch from the mustard green stems introduced a further layer of texture, while the wasabi contributed aromatic lift without overwhelming the seafood. The tofu skin remained unobtrusive, functioning primarily as a vehicle for the toppings rather than a dominant flavour component. The finish resolved into lingering wasabi aromatics and savoury shellfish notes, supported by the clean acidity of the rice.

Overall, a specialist inari venue defined by playful topping combinations and contrasting textures, strongest where individual components contribute distinct structural roles rather than blending into a single texture.

Mermaid Cafe is located at 60 High Street, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand.
