The tea at a Japanese tea ceremony is the highest grade of matcha and this Glico Pocky Koi Fukami Matcha is a limited edition flavour using just that ‘koi fukami’, or ‘deep, dark’, matcha from Uji, Kyōto, Japan.
The construction is much like the Giant Uji Matcha Pocky by Glico Japan with a matcha white chocolate enrobing a matcha flavoured biscuit that’s tinged lightly green.
Upon tasting, though, these Pocky distinguish themselves from the Giant Pocky with its intensity and depth of matcha flavour. Each stick smells of a high-quality green tea. An initial sweetness of white chocolate developed to a rich and fragrant flavour of matcha with prominent vegetal notes before a pleasant green tea bitterness emerged in the finish that intensifies the matcha flavour and balances the sweetness. The biscuit stick is unsweetened with a mellow matcha flavour and cleanses the palate between sticks with the constant alternating sweetness and bitterness of the matcha flavour ensuring it never becomes boring. These were delicious!
