We don’t often visit the inner west, let alone food trucks in the inner west. Yet with glowing recommendations from D’s colleague and impressive online reviews, we found ourselves heading to the parking lot of a car wash on Parramatta Road in Haberfield after hours to visit the Mister Gee Burger Truck.
The menu at Mister Gee’s is short and simple, listing one burger, one style of sauced fries (in addition to plain), one flavour of milkshake and ice tea. While the fries and milkshake flavours stick around for a few weeks, the burger changes each week so you need to get in quick if you see something you like.
We spot the 1-900-BURGER ($13.00) on their social media and head on over for a fix of ‘grass-fed beef patty, double American cheese, grilled onions, Coke plus coffee bacon sauce, burnt pineapple, pickles and sriracha-maple mayo between two soft brioche buns.
It goes without saying that we’ve never had a burger quite like it. It’s packed with flavour – there’s the savoury in the beef and cheese, there’s the sweet with the pineapple and onions, there’s the tanginess from the pineapple and pickles, and just the slightest hint of bitter from the sauce and of heat from the mayo. Everything just works in this burger, making it one of the best burgers we’ve had for $13.00. The Cornflake Charger from Burgerfuel is still our favourite, but this one comes close.
These were Truffle Fries ($6.00) to share. The truffle mayo is thick with a rich truffle flavour, pairing well with the crispy shoestring fries.
And to wash it all down we have a PB&J Shake ($7.00), which has a strong peanut flavour that came through a strawberry-like sweetness. It’s quite liquid – it’s not a thick-shake – so it’s not too heavy after a burger, although it’s quite small.
As you can expect from a food truck, it’s not the place you visit for a comfortable meal. Milk crates double as seats and the few stainless steel tables are snapped up quickly. We arrive at 5:50 pm and wait for them to open at 6 pm – we’re not fans of queues.
