Lychee jelly can often be found in individually sealed bite-size plastic cups from Asian supermarkets, but this Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Lychee Jelly caught my eye by coming in individually sealed pockets from which you squeeze the jelly. The pocket contained just jelly and isn’t suspended in liquid like Jelly Joy.
The jelly used 13% lychee juice and was set using konjac powder from Gunma prefecture in Japan. To eat the jelly, the top of the pocket was torn off and the jelly was squeezed out gently.
A fragrant floral aroma of lychee was evident on opening the pocket. Unlike the jelly cups, there’s no lychee juice leaking everywhere. The jelly had the consistency of a strong gel that did not melt readily in the mouth, so brought a delightful mouthfeel on chewing. The jelly had a fresh and bright lychee flavour that was fragrant and floral with a gentle sweetness. Overall, it recalled the toothsome texture of the nata de coco cube commonly found in lychee jelly cups.
This Orihiro Purunto Konnyaku Jelly Lychee contained 6 pieces or 120 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2017.
