With everyone scattered around Sydney, the dinner dates that D and I have with T and N tend to be in the suburbs. This time we decided on Hukuya in Eastwood. It’s a Japanese restaurant on the Korean side of Eastwood, and unsurprisingly, also run by Koreans. It had good reviews, though, so we were willing to give it a try.
I ordered the Sashimi and Sushi Combination Set ($20.00), featuring tuna, salmon, kingfish, eel, and chicken. Raw is the best way to eat fish (grilled is a close second), and here, the fish was fresh and firm – even the tuna, which is usually the first to take on the fishy smell. I did, however, find a bone in a salmon sashimi. That was disappointing.
We also ordered the Soft Shell Crab Roll. The soft shell crab was crispy and still pleasantly warm from its time in the deep fryer. The crab itself, though, was overwhelmed by the batter and rice surrounding it that it was hard to distinguish.
My experience at Hukuya was ordinary and average – I wouldn’t be opposed to returning, but there’s also nothing to draw me back.
