I’d been past Reuben Hills on the express bus between Eddy Avenue at Central and UNSW thousands of times in the past 8 years, and it wasn’t until K started insisting that I needed to try their baked eggs some 8 months ago, that we ventured in one week in early August.
Of course, I get the soft baked eggs ($18.00) with jamon, kale, ranchero and rye. K was right – this is a super tasty dish. There was a mildly spicy heat to the ranchero and together with the runny eggs, made dipping the bread in a dream. I usually snub rye bread and stubbornly stick to my white bread, and here, I didn’t even mind. The jamon added pleasant hints of saltiness, and the wilted kale green added a healthy splash of colour.
Always on the lookout for interesting drinks, I spot the cacao cold brew ($5.00). I was expecting something darker coloured (like sarsaparilla) so was surprised to receive something the colour of beer. It’s very slightly bitter (but not like cocoa), with subtle citrus and very earthy notes. It’s not sweetened (and I could imagine it tasting amazing with sugar, although not a flavoured sweetener like honey) and its refreshing qualities remind of barley tea that make it the perfect drink for summer.
