Chocolate covered biscuit sticks sound like something squarely aimed at children. But in Japan, there’s no such thing as being too old for Pocky. Indeed, the name of Glico Pocky Otona No Miruku (‘Adult Milk Pocky’) is obviously targeted at adults.
Otona Milk is also known as Rich Milk Pie. It looks like your original Glico Pocky Chocolate with its biscuit stick enrobed in a layer of milk chocolate. But what distinguishes it, is the biscuit stick that’s less ‘biscuit’ and more pie crust like a crispy pretzel, covered in milk chocolate.
The pie crust stick (above, right) gave the Pocky an added crispiness and flakiness, a significant textural difference probably better appreciated by adults. It falls apart more easily with each bite and it’s covered in a layer of milk chocolate that’s thicker, sweeter, and less dark than ordinary Pocky (above, left), thus giving it a more mature taste. Swapping out the darker chocolate for the added textural fun makes the adult Pocky just as moreish as the original, although I do wonder if it would taste even better with a darker chocolate.
The box of Glico Pocky Otona no Miruku contained 2 packs each with ~15 pieces. It was manufactured in Japan, and purchased in Ōsaka, Japan in 2014.
