101kissa, Chippendale

A number of cafes opened up during 2018  as the development around Central Park has gone up. To see out 2018, I joined a few colleagues for some Modern Australian and Japanese fusion cafe food at 101kissa.

To start, this is the Purple Sweet Potato Latte ($4.90), an interesting flavour I’ve not seen elsewhere. While it looked like taro, it had the same clear sweetness of a purple sweet potato with a pleasant creaminess.

have the Pink Kani Pasta ($22.00) with softshell crab, peas, onion, pink sauce, crab meat and dried hot chilli.

The soft shell crab was crisp and paired well with the creamy pasta in the pink sauce, which tasted like a mentaiko sauce with a hint of tomato tanginess. Flecks of crab meat were distributed (sparingly) throughout, while the peas added some freshness to cut through the creaminess. The pasta was a perfect al dente and a good sized portion.

This is my colleague’s Miso Shiitake Mushroom with Noodle ($15.90) with snow peas, knife shaved noodle, seasonal greens, edamame, onsen egg, chilli flake and housemade miso mushroom sauce.

Finally, this is another colleague’s Toriniku ($16.90) with sous vide chicken breast, brocollini, radish, cherry tomato confit, greens, edamame wasabi purée and Japanese black bean dressing, as well as a Japanese candied egg (+$2.50).

The food at 101kissa is tasty, beautifully presented with decent portion sizes. All this, served in an inviting wooden and white interior with an open kitchen makes it an ideal place for catching up.

101kissa is located at 94a Abercrombie St, Chippendale NSW 2008.
