Almost all of the mochi with a lengthy shelf life is from Taiwan, and this here is Royal Family Japanese Mochi.
Each box contained one sealed package containing 5 pieces each of black sesame, peanut and red bean mochi.
This is the sesame mochi, which contained 23.44% sesame paste.
This is our favourite of the three by a long shot. The white and black sesame seeds add a textural crunch to the general softness of the mochi that’s sorely missing in the other flavours, while the strong flavour of the black sesame paste holds it’s own against the sweet mochi.
This is the peanut mochi, which contained 23.12% peanut butter.
The maltose used in the mochi component adds an odd sweetness and interferes with the peanut centre. The peanut paste would’ve benefited from a touch of salt and some crunchy texture to contrast the softness of the mochi.
Finally, this is the red bean mochi. It contained 25.76% red bean.
Compared to the previous two flavours, this one looked and tasted rather lackluster. The mochi component is very soft with a prominent maltose sweetness that also takes away from the nutty sweetness of the smooth red bean paste. We’d have preferred a rougher texture to the red bean, which would have countered the sweetness of the mochi.
In the future, we’ll stick to boxes containing just the black sesame flavour.
This Royal Family Japanese Mochi contained 450 g or 15 pieces. It was produced in Taiwan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2019.
