This is the Starbucks By Nespresso Espresso Roast, which is the beginning of all espresso beverages at Starbucks. According to the box, ‘every espresso beverage we handcraft for you started right here. The quest began in 1975 with a search for the perfect melding of beans and roast, ending months of intense experimentation later with the coffee you’re holding in your hand. A recipe for caramelly sweetness – so right it’s never been changed’.
The coffee is a dark roast with an intensity of 12 out of 13 and comes in a dark blue capsule with a dot in Starbuck’s signature green.
The espresso was a translucent brown-black colour with a bold, woody aroma. Prepared as a long black with a 1:1 water to espresso ratio, prominent woody notes came through at the head of each sip ahead of the promised caramelly sweetness in the body before a strong bitter finish lingered long on the palate. This is coffee best enjoyed with milk to round out the bitterness but still allow the intensity of the coffee to came through.
