Chip Star is one of D’s favourite brands of potato chips and we enjoy trying all the flavours when we’re in Japan (our favourite is Seaweed Salt). Due to their bulky packaging, we tend not to bring any back with us — see Travels for the flavours we eat in Japan — but we found ourselves with this Yamazaki Biscuits Chip Star Soy Butter on the way back simply because ran out of time to find an appropriate space to eat it in despite our hunger (and the inappropriateness of eating on the subway).
This one uses butter from Hokkaidō, which produces the vast majority of the raw milk used for butter production in Japan. The chips have a pale orange seasoning dusted on each surface and have a similarly pungent, rich dairy aroma as other products flavoured using Hokkaidō butter, such as the Pretz that use cultured butter (1, 2). The taste is similar with the added hint of soy sauce that, together with the lightness and crispness of the chip original itself, makes the richness of the butter more enjoyable than the Pretz that has the butter both embedded into the biscuit and dusted on the surface.
This Yamazaki Biscuits Chip Star Shio Butter contained 50 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Takachiho, Miyazaki, Japan in 2019.
