Xing Fu Tang — a Taiwanese bubble tea store — opened up in Sydney in late July. After the fanfare died down a few weeks later, I dropped by to pick up this Matcha Boba Milk ($6.50, with reduced ice), which consisted of strawberry flavoured pearls in a matcha milk tea and topped with a bouncy panna cotta shaped like a rabbit.
Consumed chilled, the vegetal notes of the matcha came through faint with an overwhelming sweetness (not adjustable) and thin mouthfeel (no ice was not at option), while the pearls bring a chewy texture but not much else flavour. The rabbit was cute and very detailed with a wobbly jelly consistency and a pronounced dairy flavour. Overall, though, the drink was aesthetically pleasing but lacked sufficient flavour to stand out amongst the saturated bubble tea market in Sydney.
