This is Smith’s Potato Chips Teriyaki Chicken, a limited edition from 2020 inspired by Asian flavours.
On opening the bag, these chips have that distinctly Asian sweet and tangy aroma that so defines teriyaki sauce. They’re crinkle cut and dusted in a deep brown coloured seasoning. Upon tasting, the salty umami of the teriyaki — ostensibly soy sauce and mirin — came through at the head, with the initial tanginess mellowing to a rounder flavour as the potato flavours came through. There are notable hints of garlic as well as an undertone of chicken, but the predominant flavour was teriyaki. Overall, this Asian inspired flavour successfully captured teriyaki chicken without having the latter dominating as it does in most chicken flavoured chips.
