Machi Machi Plum Green Tea

This is the Machi Machi Plum Green Tea ($6.50 for medium, no ice, half sugar, +$1.00 for pearls).  Their Jasmine Plum Jello has long been one of my favourite drinks from Machi Machi, so I was delighted to see them release this version with just the plum base without the markup of the bottle and jelly.

The tea was a semi-opaque green-brown colour and served chilled, gently sweet floral notes of jasmine green tea came through at the head of each sip before the second half of the sip saw a gentle acidity from the plum developing to a puckering intensity with a moderate astringency towards the end of the sip. In contrast to the Plum Jello, which relied on the jelly base to flavour the jasmine tea, the green tea here carried the plum flavour. The plum flavour was bold and fresh, more like maesilcha or umecha (Korean or Japanese sour plum tea, which has a clearer sweetness) than suanmeitang (Chinese sour plum tea, which has more medicinal notes from being sweetened by longan and goji berries) but with a hint of almost savoury quality that recalled the latter.

Machi Machi is located at Shop RB05A LG Level Central Park Mall, 1 Central Park Ave, Chippendale NSW 2008.
