This is the Nippon Yell Dried FRuits Wakayama Nankō Ume. It featured nankō ume sourced from Wakayama Prefecture. Recognized for its rich aroma and fruity flavour, the nankō ume is considered the top-tier variety among ume.
Each piece was about a 1.5-2 cm in size and varied from a deep orange to a greenish hue with an apricot-like aroma. Upon tasting, the flavour effectively captured the fresh tartness of the fruit, reminiscent of a dried apricot but with a crisper and juicier texture, less dehydrated and less chewy. It started with a gentle sweetness from the sugar coating the exterior, accompanied by a moderate acidity at the beginning, then intensified to a sharp sourness from mid-bite. Despite the addition of sugar syrup and glucose, the sourness persisted through to the finish, leaving one’s palate salivating long after consumption. Overall, these were enjoyable fruity snack that showcased Wakayama Prefecture’s premier variety of nankō ume.
