Established in 2018, L.A. Donuts in Beverly Hills is known for its wide array of traditional yeast-raised hand-cut American-style doughnuts.
During one evening on our way to Kingsgrove, we picked up a selection of their doughnuts.
Cinnamon ($3.50)
Measuring about 11 cm in diameter and 5 cm in height, this doughnut had a dusting of cinnamon sugar on its exterior, with a lightly crisp shell surrounding a soft interior. While we appreciated the size, we found the inside a bit dry and needing more cinnamon sugar to enhance moisture and sweetness.
Pineapple ($3.50)
Similar in size to the Cinnamon variant at about 11 cm in diameter but slightly shorter at 4 cm, the glaze played a crucial role in adding moisture to the doughnut. The bright pineapple flavour from the glaze was notable, although a thicker glaze would have enhanced the overall flavour. Nevertheless, the doughnut’s lightness and the thinness of the glaze made it incredibly easy to enjoy.
Apple Fritter ($5.00).
Apple fritters are typically characterized by their knobbly shape, often made from leftover doughnut dough. Its was a substantial size at over 11 cm in diameter and 6 cm at its highest, and turned out to be our favorite among the three. The vanilla glaze provided a gentle sweetness, maintaining a lightly crisp exterior. The interior, subtly sweetened with a hint of cinnamon, achieved the tenderness and moistness we missed in the previous two doughnuts. Bits of apple introduced a subtle acidity and variation in texture, resulting in a surprisingly light mouthfeel that was enjoyable and not overwhelming despite its size.
Our first experience with L.A. Donuts left us with a promising impression, prompting the likelihood of future visits. Although the cinnamon doughnut didn’t particularly captivate us, we were notably impressed by the well-balanced flavours and textures of their specialty doughnuts. We look forward to exploring more options from their extensive selection during our next visit.
