Bad Boy Bakehouse achieved second place in the ‘Traditional Jam Donut – Yeast Raised’ category and third place in the ‘Glazed Round Donut – Yeast Raised’ category at the Baking Associations of Australia’s National Donut Competition 2023. Given our positive experience with Doughnut Mum, another winner in the competition, we felt sufficiently confident in the credibility of the results to visit Bad Boy Bakehouse, despite its main operations as a wholesale bakery.
Jam Filled Donut (large, $4.50)
The doughnut proved to be surprisingly light, contrary to our expectations. The dough retained a tender texture at a mid-point between dense and fluffy, while the strawberry jam filling, concentrated at the center rather than spread throughout the interior, provided a well-balanced fruity sweetness to complement the dough. The doughnut was enjoyable, but it did not immediately stand out to us as being one of the best jam-filled doughnuts we’ve tasted.
Chocolate Iced Donut (large, $4.00)
Unlike the previous doughnut, the dough here was noticeably denser, resulting in a breadier texture rather than a tender one. Additionally, the chocolate icing tasted of cheap chocolate, lacking the finesse and richness typically found in doughnuts from independent bakeries. It’s possible that the glazed doughnut might have been a better option, but unfortunately, the selection was quite limited by midday.
In general, Bad Boy Bakehouse lived up to my skeptical expectations for doughnuts from a wholesale bakery, despite some positive online reviews and the awards it received.
