This is Gumnut Patisserie, a patisserie specialising in pastries, tarts and other baked goods.

The patisserie displayed a long list of awards received at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, recorded across its window display.

Banoffee Tart ($8.80)
The tart featured shortcrust pastry lined with a thin layer of ripe banana and topped with caramel-flavoured cream. It captured the expected caramel and toffee notes of banoffee, but the thick cream combined with the banana and pastry created an uncanny resemblance to banana bread batter. More banana would have provided brightness to counter the soft, cream-heavy structure.

Vanilla Slice ($7.30)
The slice featured alternating layers of buttery puff pastry and thick custard, topped with icing. The pastry retained its crunch even after 24 hours, with its rich, buttery texture contrasting well against the thick, creamy vanilla custard and its soft vanilla bean notes. However, the icing was sufficiently sweet to overwhelm the custard’s subtler vanilla character, making the slice more enjoyable without it.

Overall, the pastries were defined by rich buttery pastry and creamy fillings, with the strongest execution where textural contrast was preserved and sweetness remained controlled. Enjoyable pastries and worth a stop when in the Southern Highlands, but not stronger than what can be found in Sydney.
Gumnut Patisserie is located at Shop 7, Grand Arcade, Bong Bong St, Bowral NSW 2576.
