This is the Bandai Namco Chiikawa Wagumi Omocchi. Each bag contained 10 pieces in two Japanese-style flavours: kuromitsu kinako mochi (6 pieces) and mitarashi dango (4 pieces). The gummies came in four Chiikawa character shapes, including a rare one, which we were lucky to find in our bag.
On tasting, the gummy exterior had a firm resistance, similar to a 4 out of 5 on the Meiji softness-to-hardness scale, but with less bounce than typical Japanese gummies, resembling mochi instead. This contrasted with the soft, gooey texture of the jelly centre.
The kuromitsu kinako mochi flavour featured a kinako mochi gummy exterior and a kuromitsu jelly interior, emitting a sweet, nutty aroma. The exterior gummy released a mellow sweetness with warm kinako nuttiness, while the kuromitsu centre offered a rich, molasses-like sweetness, which imparted an almost overwhelming sweetness in the latter half that lingered in the finish.
The mitarashi dango flavour had a mochi gummy exterior and a mitarashi jelly interior, with a similar aroma to the previous flavour. The exterior gummy released a soft sweetness reminiscent of rice syrup, while the mitarashi centre provided a notable savoury soy sauce flavour countered by a rich sweetness. This flavour captured the essence of mitarashi dango in gummy form, though its sweetness also became somewhat overwhelming in the finish.
This Bandai Namco Chiikawa Wagumi Omocchi contained 38 g. It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
