Bourbon Cookie Zakuzaku Genmai

This is the Bourbon Cookie Zakuzaku Genmai. It featured a matcha cookie made with matcha powder from Uji in Kyōto Prefecture, combined with brown rice to deliver its promised popping and crunchy texture.

Each box contained 8 individually wrapped cookies. Each cookie was approximately 5.5 x 4 x 1 cm in size, with a lightly golden brown exterior and a pale green interior studded with brown flecks.0

On tasting, the cookie had a dry, dense crumb that delivered an incredibly satisfying audible crunch. The generous brown rice bits provided a delightful aromatic toastiness without being too hard to chew or sticking between teeth, and paired well with the matcha, which had a mellow sweetness that balanced any bitterness without masking its grassy notes. The combination of brown rice and matcha successfully recreated the flavour of genmaicha, achieving what the genmaicha cookie at 15cenchi seemed to aim for. Along with their impeccable texture, this made them worth repurchasing.

This Bourbon Cookie Zakuzaku Genmai contained 92 g (8 pieces). It was produced in Japan and purchased in Sydney, Australia in 2024.
