While exploring Sendai, we discovered Komeda Coffee Shop had just launched a collaboration with Grapestone’s signature product, Tōkyō Banana Miitsuketta, featuring three new menu items available from 30 October 2024.
The limited-time offerings included a Tōkyō Banana-flavoured cold jelly coffee, a hot au lait beverage, and a shironoir danish.
Tōkyō Banana Jelly Coffee (¥760)
This dessert-style drink combined housemade coffee jelly with banana milk and whipped cream, topped with banana and caramel sauces, perfectly evoking the flavour of Tōkyō Banana. The texture was delightful, with generous amounts of crushed coffee jelly dispersed throughout the cup, rather than the large chunks depicted in promotional photos. The banana milk provided a mild sweetness that harmonised with the pleasant bitterness of the coffee jelly, while the banana and caramel sauces added a luxurious richness to the finish.
Tōkyō Banana au Lait (¥700)
A warm beverage blending Komeda’s traditional coffee with banana milk, this au lait was topped with whipped cream, banana sauce, and caramel sauce. The warmth enhanced the aroma and sweetness of the Tōkyō Banana flavour, creating a drink that was as comforting as it was distinctive. The coffee served as an excellent base, carrying the banana flavour beautifully. The whipped cream was smooth and light, complementing the drink without overpowering it.
In keeping with Komeda’s tradition of offering a complimentary egg with their morning service, diners later in the day received coated peanuts. These snacks were crunchy and offered a sweet-savoury balance reminiscent of Koh Kae peanuts.
The shironoir, a hot danish filled with banana custard and topped with soft-serve ice cream, banana sauce, bittersweet caramel, and cocoa-flavoured feuilletine, was also part of the collaboration, though we did not try it during our visit.
This time-limited collaboration between Komeda Coffee and Tōkyō Banana delivered a delightful and flavourful experience. Each item reflected the essence of Tōkyō Banana while retaining Komeda’s signature touch, making the visit a pleasant surprise.
