This is the Miyako Afternoon Tea Chardonnay Yōkan, made by cominging white bean paste with Chardonnay juice.
The yōkan was rectangular, measuring 7.0 x 1.8 x 2.8 cm, with a uniform opaque tan hue and a fragrant, muscat-like aroma.
On tasting, the smooth, dry-to-touch exterior yielded cleanly, revealing a dense, paste-like texture reminiscent of potato or sweet potato. The white bean paste base was evident in texture but largely masked in flavour by the sweet, tropical grape note, which dominated from the outset. The fragrance of grape carried gently with each bite, though the yōkan softened further into a malleable paste on the palate. The sweetness was considerable, overwhelming at times, and best tempered by tea to balance the intensity. The white bean presence appeared faintly towards the finish but was quickly subsumed by the grape flavour and sugar weight.
Overall, an interesting take on yōkan, but the texture and pronounced sweetness limited enjoyment, making it unappealing for repurchase.
