Mister Donut Japan ran a limited-time Taiwan Gohan Festival between October and November 2024, introducing six Taiwan-inspired items under the “Mister Donut Gohan” savoury meal line. The focus here was on the baked offerings.
Taiwanese Pepper Cake–Style Pie (¥264, eat-in)
Inspired by the classic Taiwanese hujiao bing, this pie encased a peppery pork filling seasoned with five-spice inside a thin, crisp pastry. The flavour profile was distinctly Taiwanese, driven more by aromatic pepper and spice than by meat. The pastry was well baked and light, though the filling layer was quite thin, with only a modest amount of pork.
Taiwanese Sesame Dumpling–Style Pie (¥264, eat-in)
Modelled after Taiwanese sesame dumplings—typically glutinous rice cakes filled with red bean paste, rolled in sesame seeds, and deep-fried—this version replaced red bean with black sesame paste and enclosed it, along with a mochi-like rice cake centre, in a baked pie crust. The black sesame flavour was deep and pronounced, with a smooth, cohesive paste. The pastry was notably flaky and light, providing an effective contrast to the rich filling.
The Taiwan Gohan Festival was available at Mister Donut locations across Japan for a limited period from October to November 2024.
