Chaffic Osmanthus Pear Snow

This is the Osmanthus Pear Snow ($8.20; +$1.00 for large; fixed ice, less sugar) from Chaffic, featuring osmanthus green tea topped with pear “snow”, or finely crushed pear ice.

The beverage presented with a distinct layered appearance, with a translucent orange-brown osmanthus green tea occupying the lower half of the cup and a lighter pastel orange pear snow forming the upper layer, finished with a scattering of dried osmanthus blossoms. Aroma opened with prominent dewy, honeyed notes of osmanthus.

Initial contact delivered immediate osmanthus flavour with a delicate floral profile and gentle honeyed sweetness. The tea base was clean and refreshing, allowing the fragrant floral notes to remain the focus without becoming overly perfumed.

Through the mid-palate, the pear snow gradually integrated into the tea. Rather than contributing pronounced pear flavour, it was most evident through a subtle grittiness characteristic of Asian pears. While this added a small degree of variation to the mouthfeel, it did little to provide either meaningful texture or reinforce the fruit profile. As the layers combined, the beverage retained its floral emphasis, with the pear acting largely as a visual rather than sensory component.

Towards the finish, the toasted Chinese-style green tea base emerged more clearly, introducing moderate astringency and a slight bitterness that lingered into the aftertaste. While the flavour balance remained pleasant, the beverage lacked textural interest. The inclusion of the osmanthus jelly found in other drinks within the range would have provided a more satisfying contrast and better complemented the floral tea than the relatively understated pear snow.

Overall, a fruit tea with a layered flavour trajectory and lightly integrated texture, resulting in an elegant floral structure that is let down by its limited textural interest.
