This Suntory Umeshu Sour Non-alcoholic is a plum wine mocktail made with juice (1% from concentrate) extracted from ume grown in the Kishu region in Wakayama Prefecture and renowned for its superior plum production.
The beverage was a transparent pale golden yellow colour with a sweet-tart ume aroma and mild carbonation. Served chilled, the sweet notes of fragrant ume came through at the head of each sip and developed with a vibrant tartness in the body before dissipating as the bubbles cleared the palate. A hint of bitterness in the finish left a dry mouthfeel that recalled that of an alcoholic umeshu but with less intensity, yet firmly situating it as a step beyond the smoother mouthfeel of a proper ume soft drink. We enjoyed the deeply satisfying brightness of flavour in this non-alcoholic umeshu.
