Kombucha has been available at mainstream supermarkets for a long time now, but it’s taken us a ridiculously long time to try it. We’re not sure where the reluctance stemmed from, though, because alcoholic drinks are produced by fermentation. Nonetheless, expecting something with bold acidity, we tried this Mojo Activated Kombucha with 4% Passionfruit, hoping one of our favourite acidic flavours would make it more palatable.
The drink was a translucent yellow orange colour with a very tart and bright passionfruit nose and a light carbonation. Consumed chilled, a gentle passionfruit flavour came through with just a hint of acidity before a clean finish. Indeed, the initial lack of punch from the sweet tartness of passionfruit surprised us, but it’s the overall flavour was almost bland compared to the piquant aroma. Overall, all our reservations for kombucha were unfounded. While it’s nothing like what we expected — something with a bold acidity much like yoghurt and no hint of tea itself — it’s very palatable. As for whether we’d return for more kombucha, we probably wouldn’t as it’s quite dear for a drink we’re not fans or convinced of its health benefits.
