This is the Suntory Iyemon Kansai Hōjicha, a regional-style hōjicha developed to reflect Kansai taste preferences. It is made using bancha from Iyemon’s Kyōto tea houses and was released to commemorate the World Expo held in Ōsaka in 2025.
The beverage presented a translucent golden-brown hue with a restrained smoky aroma. When consumed chilled, it delivered a natural, mellow sweetness despite the absence of added sugar or sweeteners. This was followed by a rounded roasted hōjicha profile, with gentle smokiness building through the mid-palate. The overall impression remained clean and crisp, carrying smoothly through to a dry, refreshing finish.
Overall, a restrained and well-balanced hōjicha that emphasised roast and clarity, making it easy to drink and quietly satisfying.
