The popular cheesecake brand from Shanghai, known for its signature cloud-like cakes and over 135 branches internationally, opened its first Australian outpost in World Square in early 2025.

Original Cheesecake ($25.00).
Made with French cream cheese, this is the brand’s signature product. Served chilled, the cake had a denser, more pronounced cream cheese flavour compared to Uncle Tetsu’s version. However, a short microwave warm-up (around 30 seconds) restored it to a light, airy texture, melting delicately on the palate. The inclusion of large sultanas—measuring nearly 3 cm—added a sweet, juicy crunch but felt out of place. While novel in appearance and potentially sourced from grapes like Shine Muscat, their size and flavour disrupted the overall harmony of the cake.

Chocolate Cheesecake ($25.00)
More aligned with personal preferences, this version struck a balance between richness and lightness. Eaten chilled, the chocolate flavour dominated pleasantly, muting the tang of the cream cheese and offering a smooth, creamy texture akin to a soft chocolate cake. Chocolate chips at the base introduced a deeper cocoa richness, enhanced further when warmed, transforming the texture into something more chiffon-like. This was a strong contender for repeat visits and left a favourable impression.

Overall, Kumo Kumo delivers cheesecakes with a delicate texture and light sweetness, best enjoyed slightly warmed to mimic a just-baked quality. The original version was respectable, though the sultanas felt unnecessary. The chocolate cheesecake stood out for its flavour and balance, and justifies a return visit—especially to explore other offerings in the range.
Kumo Kumo is located at Lower Ground, World Square, 644 George St, Sydney NSW 2000.
