Yellow Stage, Eastwood

Yellow Stage has been open almost directly opposite Eastwood Station for a good number of years. Not a fan of Korean approaches to ‘fancy’ cakes in general, though, we’ve never taken the time to visit before receiving a few of their macarons from friends.

The macaron above is the Earl Grey, which was the best of the three we tried. The notes Earl Grey came through faintly at the head of each bite upon biting into the macaron shell, before being promptly overwhelmed by the richness of the smooth chocolate centre.

This next one is the Cookie Cream, which we’d initially mistaken for black sesame. The cookie flavour was subtle, giving a slight grittiness to the cloyingly sweet cream and hint of cocoa flavour in the finish.

Finally, this Yuzu was most disappointing of the three. The flavour was unmistakable as lemon, with nary a hint of the uplifting yuzu flavour. While stores may have been able to get away with passing off lemon as yuzu a few years ago, its popularity also means it’s more difficult to fool customers who seek it out.

These macarons were an interesting distraction during lockdown they did quite the opposite of inspiring a visit to the shop itself.

Yellow Stage is located at 15 Railway Parade, Eastwood NSW 2122.
